On May 13th, for the first time since 2010, Jupiter entered the zodiac sign of Pisces. This is a powerful event and something that will reverberate throughout all our lives in the near future. But in some ways, it's also the astrological equivalent of herding cats! And with Pisces preparing to host both co-rulers, Jupiter AND Neptune, for the first time in 166 years, I thought it would probably be wise to write a guide to understanding this rare and significant event!
Jupiter is an unruly giant. It often lies at the heart of the feelings that drive us to set out on great adventures. And when it guides our focus towards the horizon, it becomes harder to ignore the desire to travel and explore the limits of our freedom. Meanwhile its home of Pisces is a sign of porous boundaries, ephemeral dreams and unfettered imagination. Its sensitive and soulful nature could sometimes seem at odds with Jupiter's bombastic disposition. But Pisces' free-thinking inquisitiveness merges as one with Jupiter's quest for the bigger picture.
One thing's for sure: Jupiter's first visit to this celestial home in ten years is putting the astro-cat amongst the planetary pigeons! Because, as our urge to roam grows, it won't just be our physical constraints that we seek to loosen. Jupiter is a planet of the mind as much of as the body. We're about to experience a time of enhanced creativity, broader perspective and unrestricted thinking. We may also feel a greater appreciation for the importance of expression and the need for enjoyment. Jupiter is the planet of generosity, humour, and fun after all! And after the year we've all just had, that's one development that's most welcome!
This all bodes well for the hospitality industry, and the arts in particular. With Jupiter's arrival in Pisces scheduled just a few days ahead of lockdown easing in the UK, we can expect a boom in business as people head out to enjoy themselves, broaden their experiences and reconnect with the culture we've all been starved of. In promoting growth and abundance Jupiter also becomes synonymous with wealth and leisure. So, as it leaves progress-driving, tech-focused Aquarius, and enters the more holistic Pisces, we may all be about to find new and different ways to earn, spend and enjoy the fruits of our labour.
Yet there's a word of caution to accompany all this optimism. Although, as the planet of good fortune Jupiter's influence in our lives is usually a boon, it's important to remember that we can have too much of a good thing. Sometimes, by hyping up enthusiasm and encouraging us to ride our luck, Jupiter's gregariousness can lead to excess. And at the June Solstice - the day UK lockdown restrictions are planned to end completely - Jupiter hangs still in the sky as it prepares to march backwards towards its return to Aquarius in July.
As such, it wouldn't surprise me if our appetite for freedom sees us bite off a little more than the pandemic allows us to chew. Most of us have sometimes suffered from our eyes being bigger than our stomachs. And in Pisces, our efforts to manage and channel Jupiter's irrepressible zeal is somewhat compromised by a lack of boundaries or a sense of clear direction. It may be that we end up making a few mis-steps in our rush to make the most of new opportunities opening up. As such, there's a chance that some lockdown restrictions, or other challenges we thought done and dusted, rear up again and demand our attention.
But as Jupiter turns backwards, we mustn't confuse reversal with failure or defeat. Should temporary frustrations return, we have to remember the purpose they serve as a necessary part of learning how to overcome barriers and rise above mundane aggravation. As Jupiter also represents faith, morality and higher understanding, its journey through Pisces is a soulful experience. And as long as we can understand why we're asked to make sacrifices, can see the wisdom in what we're being asked to do and remain compassionate to the cause we're fighting for, we'll be able to take any setbacks in our stride and with good grace.
Because, despite the stop-start nature of Jupiter's path, it remains a real source of hope and solace through this topsy-turvy year. Provided we keep faith in our ability to rise above short-term frustrations, and continue to focus on the bigger picture, we'll find that belief in a better future will be rewarded. Jupiter will begin marching forward again in October amidst a powerfully supportive link with Mars converged with the Sun. So, even if the ride gets bumpy and we have occasion to fall off the horse, we shouldn't be afraid to get back on and drive forwards once again with determination and vigour.
And as the year ends and Jupiter re-enters Pisces to consolidate its powerful influence on our lives, we'll realise we have so much to learn from, so much to gain from our experience and so much to look forward to. Though the story of the pandemic might not be over, Jupiter's visit to Pisces represents the turn of a page and the beginning of a new, redemptive chapter. So, as it sails into Pisces territory this May, we can banish any thoughts of getting that sinking feeling. In these waters, it really won't long before we're swimming like fishes again.
