THURSDAY July 1 The symbol for Scorpio email - Part 3 Dear Jonathan, I remember, in the Eighties, a campaign by Californians to change the name of the fourth sign of the zodiac. 'We can't call it Cancer any more,' people insisted, 'That will be offensive to folk who suffer from the illness of the same name.' Somehow, though, the movement to re-christen Cancerians as 'Moon Children' never caught on. Amazingly, most people managed not to confuse the celestial position with the medical condition... even without the intervention of the language police! I beg to suggest, Jonathan, that in trying to change the Scorpion to the Eagle you are being similarly twee. Meanwhile, yesterday's remarks about 'language police' remind me of other misleading words in astrology. Often, for example, we use horoscope to mean daily forecast when horoscope means 'vision of the hour' and should refer only to a full birth chart. Nor should daily forecasts be called 'stars'. It is very hard to measure constellations, especially when they drift over time. So, over 2000 years ago, in my branch of astrology, a deliberate decision was made to base the signs on the sky, not the stars. SATURDAY July 3rd No Thought for the Day
