January 29th to February 4th 2007
MONDAY January 29 A date with destiny For as long as I have been an astrologer, I have been fielding questions about 'the end of the world'. During the eighties and the nineties, the big fear was that we would not reach the millennium. Every day, I would get letters asking whether Nostradamus was right to predict an apocalypse in 1997. Once '97 came and went, people started asking the same question about 1999. I had a standard reply: 'Don't worry. nothing worse than usual will happen.' The new 'date with destiny' is 2012. I'll say more soon, about why that year really will be special.

TUESDAY January 30 What the Mayans knew... Transits of Venus are a bit like buses. You hang around for a century hoping one will come along, and then two turn up within a decade. We last saw Venus pass across the face of the sun in 2004 exactly as the ancient Mayan astronomers had said that it would do. The Mayans based their entire calendar and much of their culture on Venus, who they called Quetzalcotal. They knew that the 2004 conjunction had a cosmic counterpart in 2012. They viewed this as particularly significant, so much so that they made no further predictions past this point. |
WEDNESDAY January 31 Why did the Mayan calendar stop? The astronomer priests of the long-lost Mayan civilisation were fascinated by the movements of Venus. Though only partial fragments of their knowledge survive, we know they saw enormous significance in what we today, call a 'transit'. With astonishing precision, they worked out every date when Venus would pass across the face of the Sun, right through to 2012. Then their calculations stopped. Did they run out of stone on which to carve their calendar? Did they think the world was going to end? Or were they, as I shall attempt to explain tomorrow, making a much more amazing prophecy? |
THURSDAY February 1 Cracking the secret of time travel At Full Moon we become more imaginative - so, as the Moon is Full now, I shall be brave and attempt to explain why I think the ancient Mayan calendar finishes so abruptly in the year 2012. I really don't think it suggests the end of the world. I believe this end of time literally predicts the imminent end of time as we currently know it. Later this century our scientists will crack at least part of the secret of time travel. If I am right and the Mayans foresaw this, the question of how they foresaw it answers itself! |
FRIDAY February 2 Power of the Full Moon... The Moon has been looking pretty full for a couple of nights now. This morning, at 5.45am (GMT), it became 'fully full'. By the time you see it tonight, it will have started to wane. It won't look different but if you are psychically sensitive to such things, you may find that it has slightly less power to inflame the senses and intoxicate the emotions. Like almost every astrological influence, a Full moon is most influential in the period just prior to its 'culmination'. Only comets and eclipses are traditionally deemed to leave a legacy that intensifies for several weeks. |
SATURDAY February 3 Speedy Mercury Mercury is the fastest planet in the solar system. The communication planet zips round the zodiac spending, usually, no more than three weeks in each sign. In February, for example, it begins the month at the 28th degree of the sign Aquarius - and by the end of the month, it gets to, er... um... the 28th degree of Aquarius! That's because, half way through the month, it begins one of its regular backward phases. Does that mean then, that we'll all finish February right back where we started? Not quite. But if you've got something you aren't sure of and you want to review it, here comes the perfect opportunity. |
