~ Gardening by Moon phases ~
~ AstroDiary ~
Best time for lunar gardening is moonrise or moonset.
This does not necessarily mean gardening at night!

Reader Matthew Fletcher asked about planting
and gardening by the phases of the moon.
The idea is very simple. You plant when the moon is waxing,
and harvest when it is waning. It seems to work, and most
authorities agree that plants grow better when the moon is
waxing.
Astrological gardeners take it further. Here, the theory is
that the sign the moon is in will influence the growth of
the plant, and that if you match your plant to the right sign
you will get better results. Signs are divided into elements:
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are Fire signs; Taurus, Virgo and
Capricorn Earth; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius Air; Cancer,
Scorpio and Pisces Water.
Thus, days when the moon is in an Earth sign are best for
root crops like potatoes and carrots. Water signs are best
for leaf crops such as cabbages and lettuces. Air signs are
for flowers of all sorts, plus vegetables such as broccoli
and cauliflower. Fire signs are for all fruits, and vegetables
which produce edible seeds, such as peas and beans.
To save you the chore of working it all out, astrologer and
scientist Nick Kollerstrom's Gardening & Planting By The Moon
2003 (updated annually, Foulsham Books) has all the right
dates, with root and flower symbols on the page to make it
easy, and planting notes as well.
