On
Friday 7th March, the Thought for the Day published
the following: an email criticising Jon's stance on
the proposed war with Iraq, and his reply with an
accompanying cartoon. This provoked a huge response
from readers with over a 1,000 emails received to
date. Below is a 'snapshot' of some the emails received.

Dear Jonathan,
To balance Joyces letter you may like to know that
during frequent visits to Baghdad in my capacity as
a reinsurance broker I formed friendships with many
citizens of Iraq who proved to be amongst the most
hospitable, protective and pro-western of all I encountered
in the Middle East. It is these same people that are
now to be annihilated in the name of oil. This is
not a just war. This is not even a war, but an illegal
invasion of a sovereign state. Legalised mass murder
of a people fundamentally friendly to the west. I
believe that buried deep within the British psyche
is the knowledge that, when push comes to shove, we
will fight absolutely any odds, whatever the price,
and will ultimately prevail. Hand in hand with that
belief goes an innate sense of justice and fair play.
Hence our outrage, and support for America, following
September 11th. That huge amount of goodwill is, for
me, being squandered by the antics of an oil-man hell-bent
on raping the oilfields of Iraq - as of course one
did about 150 years ago. I am the first to support
a just invasion. But an unjust invasion will sow further
distrust of western motives, reaping yet more Bali
type outrages. It could so easily have been my children
there. It could so easily be his.

Jonathan, I usually enjoy your interesting spin on the
world scene. I'm not a warmonger either, I would prefer
that Saddam be ousted and a new govt. put in place in
a bloodless coup. However, I don't see that happening
in the future. After reading your rebuttal to the message
in Friday's forecast, I tended to agree with you until
I looked at the cartoon that went with the forecast.
You have lost another reader. That cartoon was truly
offensive to all Americans. Forty years of freedom won
in WWII has made Europeans complacent. Think back of
how Europe was prior to WWII (or ask your parents or
grandparents who lived through that period). It can
be that way again without the intervention of the United
States which strives to protect EVERYONE'S freedom,
not just our own. We all live on this planet. Saddam
kills his own people to make a statement within his
own country. Who is protecting those innocent men, women,
and children? France? Europe? Wake up to reality!
Sign me, Another disgusted, former reader.

Jonathan,
You tell her. Most of America is being led around by
their collective noses believing all that they are told
without question all in the name of God Bless America.
Being anti-war is not the same as being anti-American.

Jonathan,
Joyce is one of 15 to 20 % of Americans who want to
believe, and do, that Saddam was the cause of the 9/11
disaster. I think that it is easier for the Joyce type
people to place the blame at a stationary target, reinforced
by Washington's pointing a finger at an Evil. The rest
of us the 80 to 85% are appalled at the deliberate planned
course the White House is charting. We are doing what
we can to change our course so we can intercept a kinder
future; to protect our present. Impossible? Perhaps.

Plan" Download it at: http://www.newamericancentury.org/publicationsreports.htm
It is hard to believe that a Fascist USA is evolving
from this plan. Your next drawing should show "liberty
holding T. Blair in her arms (or she in his arms) where
each are holding rifles and are wearing CD ear phones.
Enjoy your commentary.
