There's a glorious old saying, 'when you're in a hole, stop digging'. But, of course, people who have dug themselves such holes rarely stop long enough to concede as much. If the time changes, the plan of action may have to change too. Surely that's far better than to become entrenched in a situation that has begun to grow ever more unsuitable. Too often, we use our commitments as excuses. We say, 'I'd love to, but I can't because I am already under an obligation.' In the realm of social nicety, such statements may be acceptable. If though, they reflect the reality, there's a big problem. We may not be able to do anything about the fact that life is short but we can at least ensure that it is sweet.

That means spending a significant amount of time performing activities that afford us genuine satisfaction.
